Sweet Shop on the Shore

Performed by Kate Corkery

In a village on the shore of Cork Harbour an only child struggles to make sense of the world.

As the River Lee ebbs and flows nearby, regular customers come and go to a small sweet shop that is at the heart of that community. The stories they share linger in her imagination and grow a life of their own.

This is a tale of tide and time and a passage through shadows inspired by childhood in a colourful Irish fishing community.

This piece was originally commissioned by the Festival at the Edge in 2012 and Kate was later awarded Outstanding Storytelling performance of the year.

A Harper's Trade

Performed by Nick Hennessey

There was a time when ‘to harp’ meant to speak, when harpers travelled the length and breadth of the country telling stories and singing songs. As they travelled, the stories and the songs they carried with them were shaped by the places they went, by the roads they took and by the very wind that blew about them. Internationally acclaimed storyteller, singer and musician Nick Hennessey has for over 15 years been developing a vibrant and exciting style of performance the harpers of old would recognize. Drawing deeply from the wellspring of traditional sources, Nick however re-interprets the material for the modern 21st century. With a unique talent for powerful and evocative language and an innovative style of harp playing, he has performed at the London Barbican, the South Bank Centre, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Birmingham MAC and the Sage at Gateshead as well as numerous village halls across the country.

The Wild World Over

Performed by Scots-Irish Poet and Storyteller, Margot Henderson

An evening of stories with a sense of place that help us make space for the more than us.
Stories gathered from here and there, that take us on the trail of the bear, calling us home to what we know in our bones.

Much of Margot’s work is site specific, celebrating our connection to the natural environment. She was Artist Educator for the Tate Galleries for many years and was Storyteller in Residence for Coral Arts, a site-specific participatory arts theatre company. Since returning to Scotland in 2002 she has been Storytelling Fellow for Aberdeen, Writer in Residence for The Cromarty Arts Trust and Reader in Residence for Inverness. She leads writing workshops for LAPIDUS and currently teaches expressive writing and meditation and is a Cultural Creative for Nature Culture Network Scotland.
