Storytelling classes

The Now of Storytelling

A full-time professional training at the International School Of Storytelling

This is our flagship course! It is a full time, 3 month, intensive professional training that prepares you to go into the world and work as a storyteller in a wide variety of fields. It is also a bright fire to light up your creativity, to come to know yourself in new ways. This journey, both playful and profound, is a path of inner development and transformation, through working intimately with the greatest teachers of humanity – Stories!

A storyteller is more than a teller of tales, from the dawn of time storytellers have been the teachers and guides, the entertainers, advocates of change and healers of humanity. We are all made of stories, some which serve our development and others which hinder us. The destiny and future of our world depends on the stories we believe and follow.

In this course we will explore The Now of Storytelling in three different ways:

The Skills of the Storyteller: in-depth work on story structure, voice, gesture, movement, audience awareness, spontaneity and improvisation, authenticity and presence.

The Oral Tradition: building a repertoire as a storyteller working with humanity’s heritage of stories from folk and teaching tales to wonder tales and myth. You will find the relationship between the stories of the past and your own life now. As a group we shall discover which stories, old and new, are asking to be told today and what is the power of the spoken word to create destroy and heal.

Autobiographical Storytelling: working with meaningful experiences of your life and shaping them into stories to nourish and heal individuals, communities and the earth. This is a way to illuminate the full range of human experience and to help you find the value of your own voice.

Essential to this journey is a path of Inner Development - the ongoing work of being fully present, bridging the gap between who we are and what we tell. You will be encouraged to develop your own distinctive style of telling in a supportive atmosphere with individual tutorials, feedback and coaching. There will be weekly performance opportunities throughout the course for different audiences and plenty of opportunities to practice your stories. Over the years we have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds, nationalities, ages and professions. The working language is English. The timetable is Monday to Friday from 8:30- 12:30 in addition to 3 afternoon sessions ending at 16:30 and a weekly Thursday evening performance. Supporting subjects will include: singing, games, improvisation, environmental work, creative writing and artistic craftwork. There are also other optional evening activities classes and social events happening on campus all year round.
